The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner Komeito lost their majority in the 248‑seat upper house, winning approximately 46–49 seats out of the 125 contested—failing to reach the 50‑seat threshold needed for control.

It’s the first time since 1955 that the LDP has lost its commanding presence in both houses of Japan’s Diet.
Japan now faces a hung parliament, with the ruling coalition lacking control in both houses. Ishiba remains in office but in a weakened state, grappling with internal dissent, legislative hurdles, and stalled trade negotiations with the U.S. Populist and moderate opposition parties are growing stronger, reshaping Japan’s political terrain.
